Artificial Life Thread:
Csoup: doubtful, at least at first; remember how long it took it took for non-white races and even women to be given all their rights?
fullhouseforever: I'm not really sure if that's the main priority for this however. It just opens up windows for new things. I do find it intriguing about the idea of new drugs or fuels. This is one of the few areas of science that I actually like to follow.
csoup: I just got a letter from the University of Advancing Technology (like an information thing they send out to prospective students or whatever even though I've never even heard of the damn place lmao) talking about all the artificial life stuff they work with....it sounds really cool, like the actual building and programming and stuff, but of course that has nothing to with the morality of it
BL: LOL yeah... but I guess the hybridated animal might need to take some type of competency test; if the animal was reasonably near the range of human intelligence, they would be given the same rights humans are given. I doubt a chimp/human hybrid would be very far off to being like a human.
fullhouseforever: I just find the idea of the ability to in a way create a life something else. That concept used to just be another part of fantasy, but considering how close civilization is to that now, it's pretty cool. I do think though that some of the reasons for being against it are not the legitimate. I'd imagine would be hesitant simply because it changes things.
BL: Yeah... I don't see any reasonable ethical opposition to artificial life. Like FHF said, to me it just seems pretty cool.
fullhouseforever: I saw a survey once on how random people rated things ot be immoral. I was shocked to see the number of people opposed to human cloning, as well as animal cloning. I believe it was ahead of extramarital affairs even.
csoup: the main argument against cloning is who would the person be? Is has the exact same genes as someone else, so is it merely a replica of that person? or is it its own person? can you imagine the identity crisis if you were that person Tongue lol?
the other thing is that it's like "not in god's plan" or whatever to be creating multiple of the same exact creature....I think mostly it just creeps people out Wink
plus they really have no idea what sort of defects it gives the person/animal until they try it out, and most people would object to just playing around with humans and their genes without knowing any side effects. I think that sheep they cloned a while ago had some serious brain issues and then didn't even live past a year or something
plus how do you find a spot in society for some random new species to just come along? I'm not arguing against cloning necessarily, I think it's cool but I don't know if it's a great idea just yet so I'm not committing either way, but I think that pretty much sums up the opposition Tongue lol
