Next Great American Band
« on: October 27, 2007, 02:45:12 AM »
Has anyone else been watching this show? In short, it's American Idol for bands, and for the next few weeks, it's gonna be on for two hours, Friday starting at 8/7c on FOX. The show is awesome, and they've got some pretty nice bands on there. The three groups on there I would be most likely to buy CDs from are The Muggs, Light of Doom, and Tres Bien.

I love that show, I voted for Light of Doom 132 times LOL seriously I did, and I'm not done, I'm just taking a break.  But I really really like the show a lot.  Better than American Idol.

Oh fuck yeah it's better than American IdoL If Daughtry had the option available to him, he probably would have auditioned with his band over here, and the world would be a much better place. :P

Lol, I don't think it would be a bigger difference if Daughtry was in TNGAB or on American Idol, he'd have great success either way.

I caught a bit of it when you guys were talking about it in the last chat.  Don't think it's really for me.  I don't enjoy competition shows, let alone music ones.  If a band that actually resembles some of my favorites, I'm sure I'd be happy if I was given a holler to hear it however, lol (wow I just realized all those h's there, lol).

Well, Tres Bien prides themselves on a very retro 60s rock sound. If you would like any of the bands, it would probably be them. The Muggs are basically Tres Bien with a more bluesy sound. This mishmash of 12 bands is actually very diverse, if anything they tried too hard to make it diverse. What you've basically got is:
2 bluegrass/classic country bands (Clark Brothers, Old #7)
2 "classic rock revival" bands (Tres Bien, The Muggs)
1 heavy metal band (Light of Doom)
1 country rock band (Sixwire)
1 swing band (Denver and the Mile High Orchestra)
1 girl punk band (Rocket)
1 funk/blues band (Franklin Bridge)
3 otherwise unclassified rock bands (Dot Dot Dot, The Hatch, The Likes of You)

Lol, well thanks for those.  Variety is pretty nice, although I still don't think that would coax me to watch the show too much.

I thought you were exaggerating fhfreak, but it looks like that band acutally could be 12, which is funny considering the legal age thing for joining myspace.

I was looking at the MySpace music thing, and I don't think you have to enter an age for the music thing.  I was suprised by that, well if I remember correctly.

Yeah, for music artists it just says in the terms of service you have to be 14, and I think since one of the band members is 14 they're legally able to get off on that.

Lol, wow. I suppose they could always just lie if that wasn't the case, but then again they are on a national show so it wouldn't that difficult to discover either. :P

Well, their parents could just claim ownership of their sons' MySpace profile anyway.

I suppose when you're really trying to make a name for yourself that's not really an issue anyways.

So let me just get the system of this show down correctly.  Bands come to perform in front of the judges who then tell them if they want them to move on so to speak.  The part I saw must have the auditions.  Are the regular performances between those that have been accepted in a different scenario closer to something like American Idol?

Yeah, it's an American Idol for bands, you were watching the auditions.

That's probably not the best respresentation of the show then.  Then again it was also more boring than what the American Idol auditions usually are.  I guess I could check out one of regular performances some time.  That would take me having to remember though, lol. sm5
