How to find the last post in a thread
« on: February 06, 2008, 07:02:43 AM »
I'm posting this because some people around here don't seem to know how to find the last post in a thread. In the last two days, MT Fan has not included votes in his posts in the Season 2 Elinimation thread, because he didn't find the last post.

Here's the most important concept:

When you click on a thread from the homepage, or when you click on "NEW" beside a thread, the forum software DOES NOT take you to the last post in the thread. What is does do, is take you to the first post you have not read. Unless there is only one post in the thread that you have not read, the post you go to when you click on a thread, will NOT be the last post.

To find the last post.

1. Before you click on a thread, make note of who made the last post, and at what time. If the post you are looking at in the thread is by a different member, or has a different post time, then it is NOT the last post.

2. After clicking on the thread, scroll down to the bottom of the page (or hit the end button to get to the bottom of the page. This will determine if there are more posts on the page than the one you first see when you click on the thread.

3. Check the page index at the bottom of the page. The numbers go from left to right. The number of the page you are on is in black, the numbers of the other pages are in blue. If the highest number (the one furthest to the right) is blue (in other words the black number is not the highest, furthest to the right number), there are still further posts in the thread on more pages. Click on the highest number (furthest to the right) in the thread index. This will take you to the last page in the thread.

4. Repeat step 2.

5. Alternately, you can go directly to the last page of a thread by clicking on the highest number (furthest to the right) in the page index beside the title of the thread (you have to be in the appropriate board to see the page index, as it doesn't show on the homepage). You still need to complete step 2 to ensure you find the LAST post on the page.

I guess a New Post Searching For Dummies might be helpful.  I think it's clear most people are aware of this, but it is just missed due to error.  I would point out you're just as guilty as anyone with this...

Granted the thread doesn't make it absolutely necessary, but the habit is evident for many people. So I guess anyone can keep this is mind, and that includes yourself.

Oops, at least I didn't do it in any elimination threads where it screws up the scores.

Yeah, I mentioned that.  I think it just goes to show that sometimes people just do it by mistake.  The most common reason for me having done it in the past is by new posts lasting more than the current page, going backwards to check them, and responding without having read the new page.
