Verbal Plaguerism
« on: March 24, 2008, 11:09:08 PM »
I know this has always bothered me. Basically what I'm referring to is when someone rips off a joke or something from a movie or comedian in conversation and tries to pass it off as their own. Anyone one else annoyed by it?

Hmm, I think I'll move this to Intellectual Discussion.

Anyways, I guess it depends on what exactly you mean by it.  Occasionally I'll quote something from a movie or TV show I like when the opportunity comes up in conversation.  If it's brought up I would obviously acknowledge where it came from.  Of course implying it as your own can be as simple as someone not being aware of the reference, but there's not much you can do about that.  If the person defiantly was making it to be their original work than that's a different story, but I guess you have to look at the circumstance.

I actually meant to put this in random because it is a lot like the random threads you make such as "Hallway Blunders".

Either way, specifically what I meant was when someone tries to pass jokes or quotes off as their own.

Okay, well I can move it back if you wish.  This one just seemed to have opinionated overtones which made me think of here. :)

I guess it's pretty safe to say with anything that when you intentionally claim another's work as your own it's not a very humble decision.  And of course if someone's actually notices I'm sure this would click in their heads as well.
