Computer Help, someone's attacking my computer?
« on: April 19, 2008, 10:15:19 PM »
Someone with the IP of 63.116.112.1 has been attempting to "attack" my laptop twice today... almost exactly 2 hours apart.  Norton has been blocking it though.  I'm afraid it'll continue for the next few days until we leave, and if I have to shut down my laptop when we get on the plane then maybe they'll get my laptop a virus.

I was having some start-up problems, said something with my hard drive but didn't say it failed.  I should of brought my hard drive so I could back it up one last time in case I get another hard drive crash.  (I was gonna bring it but if I lose my laptop or something here then I'd really be in trouble.)

Help, and is this happening to anyone else?

I've never had virus problems, the only I can suggest is that glue (you) should unplug your computer from the internet when you arn't using it, that way glue (you) won't be attacked without knowing about it. Glue (you) could also try calling Norton.
I'm back

I would imagine Norton to be a pretty touchy suite of security applications. My experience with Norton is they make the user think something is a lot worse than it really is. Must be their attempt at making their software seem like it does more than just bog down a computer. The firewall I use (Sygate) does occasionally log a port scan or something like that but one should know one thing about the Internet:

It's noisy.

What I mean is it could be anything really. Sometimes there are computers that just randomly attempt to port scan random computers on the Internet. Sometimes it could be your ISP trying to ping your modem or something. As long as your firewall blocks those things, then you don't need to worry.

As for the hard drive, backing up is a good idea even if you aren't having hardware problems. Can you describe the errors you're getting in detail?

oh, I don't really like Norton..

umm, if it's blocking it, I think it's fine for the time being..

and definitely back up your hard drive. that's important. just make sure you don't transfer any viruses to the backup :P lol

Lol yeah that'd suck :P
I've done the LiveUpdate thing, and I did a full system scan, it came out clean.

And I did get another hack attempt, that was the 3rd one from the same IP.

that' weird lol....but if you're out of town right now, my guess is that it will probably stop again when you get home.  and yeah, as long as Norton continues to block it, you should be fine anyway :)

Yeah, I remember when I got my virus/hard drive crash last November I guess the virus hacked through McAfee or whatever, but I've heard McAfee sucks :P

Lol, I'm sorry I don't know too much about this.  I haven't even activated the Norton software on my laptop (but I haven't had any problems). :P  It seems you've gotten some pretty good advice in here though, so good luck! :)

I'm just wondering that if your computer is completely turned off, can you still have those problems?  I know you'll want to use it sometimes but at least then you could watch for any issues.

I don't think it can, if it did though then it'd suck because norton wouldn't be on to block them :P

Well I don't know.  I always figured if the hacking could work then the Norton program must as well.  So if it's shut down, I imagine both or neither will be working.  But I don't want to assume.  I guess you can update us.

Lol, well our computer says intruder detected but we always ignored and never once had a problem.  At some point, I guess you can't worry about it until you start to have problems.  What is the message specifically?

Oh no sweetie, thats terrible! You're such a beautiful, awesome person, nobody has the right to do that to you or your computer. Just remember you will always have your best friends there to support you and love you whenever times get rough. Even I will support you. I am healthy, and I am your very best friend. You are so cute, you're like a little sister to me. ;)

((And FYI, yes, this is another dare)).
