Well the name of the topic gives away the heroine of my story  ::) But you aren't going to see that just yet, just the prelude to the entire story. I've had this in my mind for quite a few years, but never put it down on paper.

~Prelude~

The old man was no older than 50, yet he had no children. He and his wife lived in a peaceful forest in the western part of the world known as Ru'Lea, which was not yet corrupted by the Shadowen which haunted the East. The year was 962, and some folk had not even yet heard of the Shadowen. They were a cruel breed who only wanted power. The more they gained, the more they wanted, and this endless cycle lead them across the East: destroying towns, killing women and children, burning homes, and then looting the rubble which they made. They then left the town and corpses of the citizens to either burn or rot.

But in the West none of this violence existed, not yet at least. The old carpenter was walking off of the beaten path, searching for the perfect tree to make a chair for a client who said he could pay as much as the man could imagine, and would pay that much if the chair met such standards. As the old man circled around trees large and small, and looked high and low, he saw the strangest of sights. He almost stepped on it, for it lay so peaceful on the ground. He would have overlooked it if he hadn't have nudged it with his toes.

It was a small child, a baby, wrapped in some sort of eerily white cloth. He knelt down to look at the babe, he thought she might have been dead because she was lying so quiet and still on the cold ground. He put his hand her front of her mouth, but felt her warm breath on the top of his palm.

He hoisted the child up and whispered,"Now where did you come from?" as if expecting her to open her tiny mouth and answer.

He then took a moment to look up, and saw exactly what he was looking for. It was a large, beautiful mahogany tree, and was perfect for his project. It was about two men wide, and twisted up perfectly, with ripe green leaves upon each limb. But then he looked down at the baby's face, and knew he couldn't just leave it there in the forest. So, he left the tree of his dreams and took the babe home to his wife.

It's not a fanfic just yet, but don't worry it will be. I play an online game called Final Fantasy XI, and quite a bit of that is intertwined with this (later). A website you can see the story of FFXI is at:

http://www.shadow-ffxi.com/HistoryofVanadiel/

The only parts that will matter are the important figures of the countries, some info on the countries, and the chapter called The Sixth Ministry, because that's about how far I am in the story (you can find that stuff on the left sidebar). Trust me, reading that and a bit more will help you understand what's going on later  ;) You don't have to, but it helps  :)
