The "Michelle Effect"
« on: April 07, 2007, 02:03:10 AM »
The "Michelle Effect"is where Michelle being bratty, or alternately having any plot centered around her (even if its a B or C plot) ruins peoples impression of an episode. I suspect there are members of this forum who are affected by the "Michelle Effect".

I've decided not to start a poll specifically on whether members are influenced by the "Michelle Effect". Instead, I've started a more general poll on whether Michelle's role in an episode affects their opinion of it.

Some times more than others, some episodes tend to irratate me a lot but others not to much. It really depend on how much focus is put one her.

I went with a lot.  Her behavior can really have an impact on how much I enjoy an episode overall.

While I wouldn't she singlehandedly ruins episodes for me, some of her more questionable behavior does diminish things at times.  A good Michelle episode during the mid to late years is generally for me when she's in a limited role or out of character.  Sometimes the behavior created in a episode becomes a problem because it has a direct impact on the plot, even if it's only brief.

So from this, it's pretty easy for me to say her behavior can influence how much enjoyment I get out of an episode, but it's obviously not isolated to this.

I voted "a lot" because for some reason Michelle just gets on my nerves, and she's not that great of actress.  And her fake laugh is pretty pathetic if you haven't noticed that.

It's a bit, but as long as the annoying Michelle centered plot in question is not the entire episode without a B plot, it has little effect on my enjoyment of the episode.

I would tend to mostly agree with this. A lot of the time I can tolerate Michelle being annoying/bratty so long as the episode has one of the following:
  • A good second plot
  • Good lines for Stephanie and DJ

There are even some episodes with Michelle being bratty that I like quite a bit, like Crimes and Michelle's Misdimeanor. The only thing I didn't like about that episode was Danny letting Michelle off the hook for the broken window (not that DJ and Stephanie don't bear any responsability, but Michelle was also responsible because she started the pillow fight).

I expected as much, given that you've mostly been killing the Michelle episodes in the Season 8 Episode Elimination.

Michelle sometimes causes a disliking to an episode. In the beginning when she was a baby she was cute, but once she became 5 she got annoying, I stopped liking the later episodes of Full House cause so many revolved around Michelle... and personally I dont think the last episode should have focused around Michelle (but thats sorta off topic)

That, and most of the plots from Michelle episodes from that time didn't seem to interest me as much as some others.  I really have look at the specific episode before I can conclude how much Michelle affects it though.

I agree most of the Michelle Plots weren't as interesting as when the show focused on either another character or the whole gang.

I think that it depends on th episode.  I actually felt bad for her in a few episodes that she was bratty in.  The most prominent of those would be The Play's the Thing.  Although she was being rude by quitting the play, Jesse and Joey had gotten her hopes up too much.  Also, I think she may have been feeling alot of pressure on her because Stephanie and DJ were both Yankee Doodle.  However, there were episodes I couldn't stand her.  Mainly, The House Meets the Mouse.  Sometimes, I just can't watch it.  To watch how badly Steph is treated just kills me.  DJ did not really show much sadness over being mistreated and bossed around by Michelle, but of course, she was preoccupied with "seeing" Steve.  Overall, I voted a bit, because that's the average of my opinion, with some plotlines affecting me a lot and some not at all.

I agree that The House Meets the Mouse was probably Michelle's worst episode. I thought that the episode would be a nice one but after what Michelle did she ruined it altogether

I have occasionally done that in the past, though not much. One episode I specifically know I've done it with is The Devil Made Me Do It. I love the Steph DJ and Kimmy subplot, but the last time it was on I was sick of the Michelle plot. Not that I will never watch the Michelle plot, but I can't tolerate it as often as its on.

Most Michelle plots arn't that bad though.

More often I've done that with non-Michelle plots, with a disproportionate number being Jesse plots. I've even turned off entire episodes because I don't want to watch them at that moment. There are some plots/episodes where I will usually turn it off/change the channel/ or go away and come back, and others where I will occasionally do it.
