Ads annoying?
« on: April 10, 2007, 09:51:22 PM »
I personally think the ads that appear between the starting post and the first reply on all the threads I go on are really annoying. I just have a feeling that after the first blow things will only get worse, so I would (dare I say it but...) propose moving the forums so that they are actually on the site's server, before the ads get unbearable. I would suggest a moving date of June 1 (the start of the summer season)... as with all previous proposals, the ProBoards forum would remain open for archival purposes.

There are annoying but, I don't feel it's bad enough to move the forums. Maybe we could try to generate funds to make How Rude Forums ad free? I would be willing to make some donations.

I agree. But i can't donate, unfortunately, but i think if we give it sometime, we might adjust to them.

Our trial period for the ads being between posts will end on April 16th. At that point in time we will either fully revert the ads back or we will provide the option for you to select which display method you would prefer.

Quoted directly from the support forum. So at the rate they are recieving complaints I am sure that they will convert back or at least we can move them back to the top. They also show no intention of adding more ads.

I guess problem solved perhaps then?  I don't think people had much of a problem when the ads were on the top, and according to that bit of info, it'll be back to that very soon.  I hadn't really noticed until you mentioned it, but it is sort of annoying in its new home now that I realize.

If you are considering moving for an alternative reason, I'd be happy to talk about that if need be though.

yeah the ads in the middle of the posts suck....why would they think ads in the middle of the damn page would be any more prosperous?  they're just obnoxious, really  :P

not worth moving the forums for, tho

Like everyone has said, the ads do suck in the middle of the page.  When the trial period ends, if ProBoards does not move them to the original position, then I think we should consider moving the forums elsewhere (2 suggestions- either a subdomain of howrude.org or another free forum hosting service).  I'm not supporting the forums moving like in the CRHR (Coalition to Reform How Rude) because 1) I saw my problems in supporting Jamie and 2) Fishywishy has a nice forum going here and I would hate to see it start all over.  I don't think many people are interested in the move, but if Fishywishy would do it, then I would go to the new forums.

If we were to host the forums on the HR site, then there are many free forums out there better than Proboards, such as: PHPBB, MyFreeBB, SMF, YaBB, and many more.  I like using SMF because it is more customizable.  Very large Admin Panel, and it also comes with a package manager that allows you to install mods (and you don't have to edit any of the code- it does it automatically).

I'd use SMF if we ever moved..
and it's much better than PB while still being a lot like it.. we won't have to use all the javascript hacks because we can change everything directly  :)

the thing is .. we REALLY REALLY REALLY need a proboards -> SMF converter. we've got soooo many posts and I'd hate to lose our members..
if one of those ever comes out, I think I'll be moving to SMF right away lol b/c there won't be anything lost at all.

If there was a way to convert everything on here over to a different board system, I don't think many would object.  The startig over process wouldn't be nearly as successful. It wouldn't hurt to look out for things like that, but we're not in a real hurry either.

I don't think that will ever happen realistically. I hate being the pessimist, but ProBoards is a proprietary forum software, and its code is probably rarely, if ever, given out to anyone, so no one would be able to develop such software. While we would lose all the posts, we would still be able to see them here. The member and post counts would probably be able to quickly recover with our activity. I mean... either we stay in a shithole or we stop complaining and pack our bags... it's a shame that many of you hold on to the past so adamantly IMO. Even so, all the posts would still be here, and the PB forum wouldn't be going anywhere. There's nothing we can lose except post and member counts... and you guys are going to turn down a software that is much better and more reliably accessed because we'll have to start from square one?

You made a very good point, BL!! SMF is much better than Proboards will ever be.  Free remotely-hosted forums are just crap in my opinion, and if we do move to SMF then I would support it because I love the way that SMF runs and looks.  It doesn't use that many server resources and can load very fast.  Some days I come on here, and it takes 10-25 seconds to load (and I am on a T1 line- one of the fastest lines available).  Like BL said, the posts will be here; it will just be locked. You can always come back here and look for your posts and move them to the new forums if you like.  But some of you members will turn down some of the best software just so that you can keep your post count at over 2,000 and you don't feel like making those 2,000 posts again.

Just my 2 cents, but SMF is much more reliable than Proboards.

It looks pretty similar to ProBoards, as Fishy commented earlier; as a matter of fact, they are derived from the same original forum code, YaBB in about 2000-ish. It has lots of statistics though (nice for me, someone who loves it  :P ). It's basically everything ProBoards is, except it's faster and has more features. One big issue with it is that it's not as easy to customize, but I don't think anyone can beat ProBoards on graphics customization. Fishy will be able to make new skins for the forum anyway (because she has an FTP client, etc.), and even if she doesn't want to, there's still a site where over 100 skins are available.
