Ads annoying?

My personal opinion is that if the ads go back on top, there's no point in moving to different proprietary software. I would support a move to free software with no ads (like phpbb), but it seems kind of pointless to move if there's still ads.

Personally I oppose almost any move. It be like starting all over again, I don't see why this is such an issue if Proboards has said that people will have the choice to switch back.

Well, IMO, ProBoards will not move them back to the original position because they make revenue off of those ads. They probably will make it "Pay us a fee and we will move them back to the original position."  If they don't move them, then I think we should consider moving to our own forums on our own website, not some crappy remotely-hosted forum that has ads.  I have no problems with the ads, but ads in the middle of posts is just stupid and idiotic.

SMF is open source software that does not have any ads (and if it ever did, the revenues would be going to HR, which for most financial purposes is either me or Paul)

Sorry about the confusion. Fishy said she doesn't like the look of the free software yet likes SMF, so I figured SMF was not free. Then when I saw the ads on the example SMF forum you linked to, well you get the point.

My only concern then with moving is that we might loose members who would decide that it's not worth continuing with the forums given the move. It seems that the interest of a lot of members in FH is waning, and for members whose interest in FH is waning, a forum move might be enough to cause them to pack it in.

I agree with this last statement..
I don't want to lose all our posts and members, and we might not be as successful as we are now.  We'll have to start all the threads over again as well.
Another concern of mine is that HR is infamous for a lot of downtime (because of our hosts unstable status) so if the site goes down, the forums will too.  And that's not good  :P

We need a PB-->SMF converter badly, though.

Many of those people are hardly active anyway though. I highly doubt anyone really active on these forums like myself, MT Fan, FHF, fhfreak, or giggles will refrain from joining the new forums if we ever moved. The unstable hosts thing is I suppose another one of the major cons... I just think that for the most part, it will be worth it. Is starting all of the threads again really going to be that hard. With our activity, they will continue to pile up quickly.

that forum you posted the link to is pretty nice looking, obviously we could make cooler skins tho .....but considering how much we'd lose i still don't think it's worth it to switch unless PB does something REALLY sucky

P.S. thanks for including me in your list of "Really Active Members," BL

LOL... well it is the 5 most active people according to the post gain chart released a few weeks ago.  ;D But anyway, yeah... but why wait until they do something really sucky? PB wants to become more mainstream, and everyone knows the best way to do that is to become so commercial and bloated with ads (*cough*EZboard*cough*). The idea behing moving is that with this new thing about the ads, they will progress into more invasive territory, eventually moving onto popus and seriously compromising their software. It's all about the revenues.

well we're fine as it is, and the only reason to move would be if it DID become really sucky..

because think how awful it'd be to lose all these posts.. I mean seriously, it's like 2 years worth of posts here... lol quite a lot..

and we don't want the forums to be as unreliable as the site can be (not to insult Paul b/c it isn't his fault sm4) - you've got to admit, despite trying to become more mainstream, proboards IS pretty reliable.

you're right, it rarely goes down or randomly loses things, which is a great quality  :P lol

But... then there's the question of where the hell PBv5 is. It's been a good two years since an update, and they have not even announced it yet... and you would recieve the impression that it is still quite a ways away... compromising software...

Our trial period for the ads being between posts will end on April 16th.

Well, it appears that PB doesn't give a damn about the clients...

I was just looking up some forum hosts... and I found that one and it said that it is free and ad free.  But I don't know what you're looking for but it looks nice.
