I think the biggest problem with their remarks was not that they said them because it was obviously a joke to us. Even Becky is involved in it, after all. It was that they didn't recognize the very impressionable Michelle wasn't playing along and taking it to heart. Of course, if they had noticed and told her right away there wouldn't have been much point to the episode.
